Junior Citizens Scheme

12.03.2008

Young people from Ilfracombe C of E Junior School are making a real contribution to their school, local environment and community by learning to work together and taking part in the Junior Citizen Scheme, supported by Transform Neighbourhood Management.

The scheme launched in March began with a presentation and brain storming session at the School, where young people got together and decided what they wanted to do as Junior Citizens.

Neighbourhood Warden, Pete Gammon and key individuals from Ilfracombe C of E Junior School helped them plan a programme of community activities and organise team building events.

The scheme aims to improve relationships within the community, improve the local environment and provide positive and fun activities.

The Junior Citizens will be wearing hoodies, with the Junior Citizen logo, designed by the young individuals. The young people hope to show that young people wearing hoodies are not necessarily causing problems, but can be a very positive contribution to the community.

The Junior Citizen crew will be actively learning about fire safety, coastal safety as well as cleaner and greener issues. Local services including Devon & Somerset Fire Service and Ilfracombe RNLI have supported the scheme and the young people by stepping up and offering their time and skills.

The scheme will be closely monitored with the hope that the full benefits will be recognised and the pilot project can be taken to the next level and mainstreamed.
